Academic Intensive English Program


The Academic Intensive English Program is designed to prepare non-native English speakers for university or graduate school in the United States. Students in this full-time program may qualify for an F-1 international student visa.

Students receive 20 hours per week of core instruction in writing, reading, listening and speaking. Students also choose an elective from the General ESL or ESL Test Prep programs. Electives may include: Grammar, Vocabulary and Idioms, Academic Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Accent Reduction, Public Speaking, Understanding the Business World, Skills for Academic Success, BT TOEFL preparation, and CUNY Assessment Test (CAT-W and CAT-R) preparation.

The Academic Intensive English Program also provides a variety of services, support, and activities:

• Academic Advisement

• Immigration Counseling

• Access to the university’s library, computer labs, and gym

• Workshops on applying to a U.S. university, Writing a Resume or Personal Statement, volunteering, and more

• Coffee hour with discussion and language games

• Tutoring Center

• ESL end of semester showcase of student work

• Field trips to NYC museums, parks, Broadway shows, and other cultural attractions

• All students registering for any ESL program are required to take our placement test.

Academic Intensive English Program Courses:


Writing

This course (open to full-time students only) provides students with the skills needed for effective writing in academic or professional settings. The writing process is emphasized, with particular focus on paragraph and essay development, as well as error correction. Students gain practice in writing clear, concise, well-supported, and accurate communication using summary writing, paraphrasing, quoting, and synthesis. Reading materials provide a basis for developing ideas and a model for writing.

Reading

This course (open to full-time students only) is designed to help students become more confident and proficient readers in English. Students explore a variety of reading genres, including newspaper and magazine articles, websites, short stories, novels, and non-fiction books. Reading skills, such as predicting, skimming, scanning, reading for details, vocabulary-building, inferencing, summarizing, and critical thinking are emphasized. Classroom discussions and exercises allow students to share and debate their ideas about texts.

Listening and Speaking

This course (open to full-time students only) is designed to help students improve their oral communication skills in various social, academic, and professional settings. Students develop their conversation skills through role-plays, discussions, and vocabulary-building exercises. Lectures, debates, and formal discussions enable students to improve their note-taking skills, listening comprehension, and critical thinking. Oral presentations allow students to develop their public speaking skills, effective body language, and pronunciation.

Electives

Students also choose 1 or 2 electives from our General ESL, Business ESL or ESL Test Prep programs. Academic Intensive English Program Refund Policy

Refund requests must be dated and submitted in writing. Attach a copy of your payment receipt with the Refund Request Form. Processing refunds requires approximately six weeks. All refunds may also be requested as a credit for any class of equal tuition. Full tuition will be refunded if request is received at least two business days before the first class meeting. After this date, refunds will be made according to the schedule below:

  • Service charge is $75
  • Non-refundable fees are $25 application fee, $50 language testing fee, if required, or any other fees that are not included in the Academic Intensive English Program.
